The Wolf Trap area was quietly settled at the end of the 18th century, as homes and large estates cropped up. Business was first brought to Vienna, known as Ayr Hill in the first half of the 19th century, when a plow factory was built. Soon after, the railroad reached the area and the population began to grow. Just after the Civil War, the region experienced a second spurt of growth as northerners arrived in growing numbers to take advantage of the area’s ideal climate and location.
Today, Wolf Trap’s location still offers advantages for those seeking a small-town lifestyle with the convenience of big city amenities. Travelers enjoy the proximity to Washington, D.C., and its two major airports. Washington Dulles International is only 12 miles away and Ronald Reagan Washington National is 18 miles away.
Wolf Trap is best known as the home of the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts. The park is home to the Filene Center and the Barns at Wolf Trap. The Filene Center is an outdoor venue for a variety of musical performances and educational programs. The center hosts more than 90 performances each year, in addition to artist master classes and a family Holiday Sing-Along. Patrons may picnic and enjoy the performances on the uncovered lawn area of the facility. The Barns at Wolf Trap is another musical venue at the park, set in two restored 18th century barns. The facility’s excellent acoustics draw in several genres of music. One can enjoy jazz, bluegrass, country, cabaret and even chamber music at The Barns.
